Puerto de Mazarron you will find all the fun of the seaside. There
is a beautiful walkway by the beach lined with bars, tapas bars and
restaurants. A brand new marina has just been completed with some
fantastic boats already moored there. There are also souvenir shops,
large supermarkets and gift shops. In the month´s of July and August,
the Port of Mazarrón comes alive with the Spanish, who come here in
their droves to have their holidays. The bars are open until 6am, the
outside discos start at 2am and if you want a peaceful holiday forget
it but if you want to see how the Spanish unite as families and take
their children out for meals and embrace the artmosphere, the Port is
well worth a visit. There is also an evening street market in July and
August where you can pick up a fantastic bargain or two.
The beach stretches for miles and goes from Bolnuevo, through the Port and Isla Plana to the little fishing village of La Azohia. Here you will find a pebbly beach with small fishing boats bobbing about on the waves.
The nearest large city is the medieval city of Cartegena where you can find evidence of the Roman era. You can take a catamaran cruise around the harbour and listen to a talk in English about the battlements and the history of the Port. Visit the shops which include some major high street names like Benetton and Mango. Visit the cultural centre to find out more about the Romans or just eat in one of the many fabulous restaurants in the city. Outside of the city is also a large retail park with many large stores and a casino.
The capital city of the area is Murcia. The city is well worth a visit as the architecture is stunning. The main square has some lovely restaurants but many more can be found by walking through the little side streets. There is a major department store, El Cortes Ingles, and many other shops. There are 2 large retail parks just off the E15 motorway. You will also find the new Real Murcia football stadium here although the cheapest ticket price is €60 as they now play in the same league as Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Another attraction just of the E15 motorway is the Terra Natura Zoo and Waterpark. This was only opened in May of 2007 and is already a big hit with residents and tourists. Obviously the waterpark is only open in the summer months but the Zoo is open all year round. There are 2 areas to the Zoo, the African which has Lions, Giraffes, Zebras etc and the Iberian which has animals that are local to Spain - Bears, Wolves, Deer etc. The zoo is well laid out and has plenty of shelter should the sun get too hot.
If you fancy a trip to Benidorm allow 2 hrs by car. You will find a very large street market here on a Wednesay and Sunday and obviously all the other touristy things. Look out for the €6 shops!
A 25 minute drive from Mazarrón will take you through Totana to the Sierra Espuna range of mountains which form the backdrop of most of the views in the area. You will find many bars and restaurants dotted around the narrow bendy roads by the views from the top are stunning. The woods are immense with wild boar and mountain goats running wild. If you carry on through towards Aledo you will come to the Monastery of Santa Eualia which has now been turned into a fantastic hotel and restaurant. On the opposite side to the monastery you will find a road edged by large statues of the stations of the cross which leads to a large statue of Jesus and a wide viewing area which gives sights across the region.
Another place to visit is Lorca which is only 30 minutes drive from Mazarrón on the E15 in the opposite direction - heading towards Almeria. There is a large castle which sits above the town. You can go on a tour with live guides and entertainment whilst listening to a message by a hand held gadget. The view from the towers across the landscape are fantastic.
If you fancy a 2 hr drive by motorway, you can go to Granada. Here you will find the Alhambra Palace where you can tour the beautiful gardens. It is advisable to pre-book your tickets to avoid disappointment. If you fancy sledging, snowboarding or ski-ing during the winter months, the ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada are a further 30 minute drive from Granada. You can hire all the equipment locally and if you are too exhausted to drive home, there are plenty of ski lodges and hotels to book into.
A 1 hr drive by the new toll motorway will take you from Mazarrón to Mojacar in Almeria. This is a lively tourist resort which is a favourite with the Spanish and the English. There is a beautiful long beach with plenty of parking and numerous drinking and eating establishments. The journey by the coast road takes you through National Parks and is well worth doing to see a very different Spain.
