Costa Cálida at Mazarrón

The Costa Cálida (English: Warm Coast) is the approximately 250 km stretch of Mediterranean coastline of the Spanish province of Murcia. This region has a micro-climate which features comparatively hot mean annual temperatures (and hence its name, "Warm Coast") and a relative degree of aridity (precipitation averaging less than 34 cm annually).

Geography and location

The Costa Cálida extends from El Mojón in the north near the province of Alicante, to near the municipality of Águilas in the south bordering on the region of Almería province.

The northern end of this coastline includes the Mar Menor ("Little Sea"), a coastal saltwater lagoon which at around 170 km² is Europe's largest. The Mar Menor is separated from the Mediterranean by a 22km-long spit of land called La Manga, on which most of the tourism development for the region has been constructed.

Cartagena and Mazarrón are two other important coastal towns in the region.

The Costa Calida is a warm coast which has laid out a warm welcome to many visitors during recent years.

Located in the Spanish province of Murcia, the Costa Calida is thus named because of a micro climate which gives it year round toasty temperatures.

Among the more popular tourist resorts of the Costa Calida is La Manga which has rapidly developed to accommodate all the visiting holiday makers. La Manga is beneficially close to the Mar Menor, an inland sea water lagoon which is good to swim in. The relaxing properties of the Mediterranean Sea, the Mar Menor and the climate in this part of the world are one of the reasons why the England football team holds its summer training here.

Car hire La Manga lets you explore this interesting region at your leisure. La Manga is Spanish for sleeve, and although this narrow strip of land is only 300 metres wide it is 24 kilometres long and stretches from the Cabo de Palos to the Punta del Mojon.

There is plenty to see and do in La Manga which has many excellent bars, restaurants and night clubs to try out. In the Mar Menor there is a wealth of water sports on offer such as sailing, swimming and jet skiing. There are even spots where you can go scuba diving in the nearby Mediterranean at the Isla Grossa, and taking out a catamaran or going windsurfing are possible here too.

These conveniences allayed with its unique geography have meant that house prices on La Manga have rocketed up over the years. They have also led to the construction of many five star hotels and luxurious apartment complexes.
