Velez Rubio is a market town in a picturesque setting, surrounded by sierras, olive groves and fields of wheat.There is a museum situated within a beautiful 18th century hospital which has a fascinating exhibit of artifacts and ceramics dating from prehistoric to Moorish times, including a section on the ancient cave paintings in this area. The main monument of note in the town is the magnificent Baroque Church of La Encarnación. Built in the 18th century, this has an imposing carved facade. Inside, the main altar has a superbly detailed, 20-metre-high carved wood retablo. Even more spectacular than this, though, are the prehistoric cave paintings of the Cueva de los Letreros, 3km out of town. It is a reasonable treck to get there but worth it as you will be able to see surprisingly fresh looking red and brown sketches of human figures, birds, animals, astronomical signs and indalos which have been dated to around 4000 BC and are amongst the oldest representations of people and animals in the world. Further paintings at La Cueva del Gabar, to the north of Vélez Blanco, are in a still better state of preservation but you can only visit here with a guide who will provide you with a rope and ladder to get you up the sheer rock face which is one of the reasons, of course, why they have survived more or less intact. Velez Blanco is a beautiful historic town with a 16th century castle at its centre. The castle is currently undergoing a long restoration as most of its contents were stripped out during the 20th century and currently reside in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. There is also a spa fountain in the town from which each resident can collect upto 25 litres of spring water each day. There is a spectacular panoramic view from Velez Blanco down the valley. Out and about A car is essential and a hire car to and from the airport is the best way to get there. The main airports at Alicante, Murcia and Almeria are all around 90 minutes away. The villa is only 10 minutes from the virtually empty Murcia / Granada motorway. There are numerous beaches and resorts within easy reach with the closest being Aguilas within 50 minutes and the large stretches of beaches at Vera, Garrucha and Mojacar all within an hours drive to the south with Cartogena and La Manga easily accessible to the north. For skiers, the resort at Sierra Nevada which is around 2 hours drive, caters specifically for sun and ski winter breaks by providing ski passes that do not have to be used on consecutive days. The windows throughout the property are fitted with mosquito blinds and have internal shutters and smoke alarms. Please note that smoking within the property is not permitted. Outside: The Cortijo is set in 6 acres of almond, olive and fig trees and has spectacular panoramic mountain views. It boasts a covered porch, huge terraces to the front and rear and a large gravel area for parking. The 10 X 7 pool is illuminated and has a poolside shower. Next to the pool is a purpose built BBQ with bar area, sink and power point for those al fresco evenings. The property and terraces are completely enclosed by white balustrade and natural stone walling and is accessed through double iron gates. Set amidst the rolling Spanish countryside, you can enjoy peace and tranquillity and almost total seclusion with only the birdsong to interrupt the quiet. You may want to climb up to the 14th century ruin which is a short distance from the Cortijo. Casa NeeNee - Local Area. Location: The Cortijo is situated 7km from the town of Velez Rubio (and the motorway). Velez Rubio is a typical Spanish town with its narrow streets which boasts a host of shops, tapas bars and restaurants. In the main square stands the church of La Encarmacion, built in the 18th century, it is where most of the town Fiesta’s start and finish. The town also has a museum within an 18th century hospital which is where you will find the tourist information centre. Here you can pick up guides to walks in the country, locations of the ancient cave paintings (3km out of town) and local events. It seems there is always a Fiesta on ‘somewhere’. The market is held in the town every Saturday from 9am - 2pm and you will be amazed at the variety of fresh local produce on offer: fish, cheese, vegetables, olives, live snails, rabbits and chickens not to mention the colourful stalls selling fabric, clothes and shoes. Velez Blanco is a short distance away and well worth a visit. The castle which was built by Italian artists between 1505 and 1515 has been refurbished and is now open to the public. It stands at the top of Velez Blanco and is a magnificent scene at night when it is lit up. Lorca town is a 20 minute drive away and this is where you will find the larger shops and designer wear. A drive up to the castle is well worth it, you won’t be disappointed. Don’t forget the Spanish siesta between 2pm and 5pm and almost everything is closed on Sundays except on the coast! If there are children in your party, you may like to visit the water park at Vera or take a drive to one of the many beaches. A day out to the Moorish town of Mojacar will undoubtedly please everyone. Here you will find a lovely beach, scuba diving, shops and all of the history surrounding this stunning hilltop town. Casa NeeNee - Just Chill. You may just want to stay and relax at the Cortijo with a glass of local wine and hours and hours of sunshine. Watch the eagles soaring overhead and listen to the frogs near the water fountain down the track. A car is essential due to the location of the property and we will organise a ‘meet and greet’ upon your arrival in Velez Rubio. You will be taken to the Cortijo and settled in by our neighbours who will be on hand (at the bottom of the hill) should you require anything in an emergency. Covered allocated parking is also provided.Around the corner from the complex, approximately 5 minutes walk from the apartment, there is a large supermarket that has a British section. There is also a restaurant and two bars within a 5 minute walk. Near by VERA/GARRUCHA/MOJACAR/PUERTO REY. The apartment is in the prime location of the area (in my opinion), being close to all of the areas amenities and at the same time providing a quiet place to return to after the day’s activities. Although there are buses and taxis, I strongly recommend that you have a car, everything is within a short driving distant. The town of Vera is about 7/8 minutes away and is a historical Spanish town. There are bars, restaurants, and a bullring and football stadium. It is great for shopping and has banks, solicitors, estate agents and every other kind of shops you will need. Vera’ streets are one of the best places to sample the rich local cuisines or to find hand crafted traditional pottery. Vera has a weekly Saturday market where many bargains are to be found. Vera Playa is about 5 minutes away and is a point of reference for lovers of naturism as in El Playazo de Vera, a strip of coast with 5 kilometres of beach with white sands and crystalline waters, is the only naturist hotel complex and beach in Spain. Puerto Rey is our nearest beach being about 2 minutes away and forms part of the longest stretch of beaches in Almeria (8 kilometres). There are also numerous bars, shops and restaurants in this area. Vera Playa also has the Water Park of Parque Acuatic, which with its many shoots and slides, plus areas to relax in offers all the ingredients for a great day out. Just down the coast about 10 minutes away is the seaside village of Garrucha. This village has three ports and if you are around early in the morning you can see the fishermen sailing out to sea. A fish auction is held about 5.30pm every evening chaired by the said same fishermen. Garrucha has a great beach, shops, bars and restaurants and is the “Mecca” of fish. If you do nothing else in Garrucha do try one of the many fish dishes served at the many fish restaurants, you will not be disappointed. Mojacar Playa is about 15 minutes drive away and offers a wide selection of shops, restaurants and bars as well as nightclubs. Mojacar Playa also has a great sandy beach and a long promenade that is perfect for strolling along. Mojacar Pueblo is about 5 minutes from Mojacar Playa and is an ancient Moorish village. It is located on the mountain top over looking the sea. It has narrow streets and cube-like whitewashed houses. It is great for exploring in the daytime and at night its bars serve some great tapas. There are 4 golf courses within 15 minutes drive of the apartment including the famous Desert Springs and 18 holes Valle del Este, and Marina Golf as well as the 9 hole Cortijo Grande. Within 10 minutes of the apartment is the Garrucha Go-Karting track where a great day out can be had by the whole family. There is a sport centre about 5 minutes away that has a gym, tennis courts and golf driving ranges. Water sports are also available at the majority of the beaches. As are horse riding, quad bike tours and rentals. Almeria city is about 50 minutes away and has all of the large shops and department stores that makes for a good day shopping. It is a lively and modern city, with a large port where you can get a ferry to Africa. It also has a bus and railway station. Almeria city also has a sports marina and fishing port. It is an old historical city and therefore has a wealth of historical sites, museums and art galleries. It also benefits from great restaurants, traditional tapas bars and nightclubs. It even has a long and wide sandy beach. The Sierra Nevada Mountains are excellent for hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter and are about 2 hours away. The famous town of Granada is about 2 hours away also. Mini-Hollywood where they filmed the spaghetti westerns such as, “the Good the Bad and the Ugly”, “the Magnificent Seven” and “A Fistful of Dollars” and many more films is now a mock-up of an American Wild West town set in the Tabernas Desert. It offers a great day out for all the family and includes mock cowboy shoot-outs and a zoo. ALMERIA AREA. This is the driest part of Europe with approximately 320 days of sunshine each year, The Almeria region is agricultural, with many greenhouses and fields growing a variety of produce such as tomatoes, lettuces, melons, lemons, oranges and olives. The Costa Almeria is as varied as any of the Spanish Coasts. The coast is relatively unspoilt, especially compared to the other “costas.” To the east of Almeria we find the rugged and desolate coast of the Cabo de Gata - Nijar Natural Park. This is an arid desert landscape and the annual rainfall here is less than 200mm. It is sparsely populated, few villages and a very low population density. Visitors feel a sense of exploration here as many of the coves can only be reached on foot. This area is particularly popular with nature lovers and back-packers.
