It is a beautiful area with mountains and hills and, the further up in the area you are, the more countrified it becomes with pine trees. A far cry from the barren landscapes and housing developments of many coastal areas.
It is a mainly farming
area, made up of Country Fincas, the main crops being grapes for the local wines (there
are bodegas in most villages selling their products), almonds and olives
The local industries
are quality shoes, leather bags, salt and marble (Pinoso is the fifth
richest town in Spain because of its salt & marble).
There are many local
shops supermarkets and restaurants (try a menu del dia) and the
local bars are always worth a visit for the conversations and the tapas.
This is real Spain
with friendly locals who, although they speak no English, will help
with a laugh at your poor Spanish.

This not the Spain of benidorm, if you want that
you have to drive there (approx. One hour down the motorway). This is
